Aid for the Children of Chernobyl
Ever since the Chernobyl disaster the Lions Clubs of South-East
England, with the help of the local schools, have been collecting
nearly-new clothes and other useful articles. One of he most specific
needs is for good-condition babies' and children's clothing, including
anoraks and coats. These should be as warm as possible as winter are
extremely cold in Belarus. It is the coldness of winter that is taking
its toll of the children, whose lungs were damaged by the radiation
fallout.
When a shipment has been gathered the Lions transport them directly to
Belarus, in order to minimise transportation costs and losses en route.
The latest collection of over 10,000 lbs of clothing,
toiletries and toys was dispatched in August to Gomel, a badly affected
town in Belarus.
The photos are of the contribution from schools in Leatherhead and
District (in Lion Bob Booker's garage).
